Hi! I’m Emily Kaplan. I grew up here in the Bay Area. I moved back in 2024 after twenty years away.
After attending Harvard College, I worked at the Harvard Graduate School of Education before getting my master’s in education. After teaching at a bilingual school in an indigenous village in Guatemala, I taught elementary school in Boston.
For the past seven years, before returning to the classroom, I worked as a professional journalist, covering predominantly immigration and religion for outlets including The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Washington Post Magazine, and elsewhere.
When I am not reporting, writing, or—my favorite—working one-on-one with children, I like to play classical piano, take photos with very old lenses on pretty new cameras, cook very spicy vegan food, and hang out with my cats, Arthur and Orange Julius.
